Switzerland Secures Deal with the United States to Lower Tariffs to 15%

Historic reduction aims to revive Swiss export sector

The Swiss government announced today that it has reached a landmark agreement with Washington to cut the tariff imposed on a wide range of Swiss goods to 15 %. The move follows months of intense negotiations aimed at easing a tariff regime that many analysts described as “extraordinarily high” and potentially crippling for Swiss exporters.

Under the previous tariff structure, Swiss manufacturers faced duties that often exceeded 30 %, making their products significantly less competitive in the U.S. market. Small‑ and medium‑sized enterprises, which account for the bulk of Switzerland’s export volume, were particularly vulnerable.

Swiss Trade Minister Anna Keller hailed the agreement as “a decisive step toward restoring confidence in our trade relationships.” She added that the reduced rate will not only boost sales of traditional Swiss exports such as pharmaceuticals, precision instruments, and luxury watches, but also open new opportunities for emerging sectors like green technology and digital services.

The United States, for its part, welcomed the reduction, citing the mutual benefits of a more balanced trade framework. U.S. Trade Representative Michael Torres stated that the new tariff level reflects a “fair and competitive” approach that encourages market access while protecting domestic interests.

Economists predict that the tariff cut could increase Swiss exports to the United States by as much as 20 % over the next two years, providing a much‑needed stimulus to an economy that has been grappling with slower growth and inflationary pressures.

Both governments have agreed to monitor the impact of the new tariff schedule and to explore further cooperation in areas such as customs simplification, standards harmonization, and joint investment initiatives.
