Australian authorities announced on Tuesday that the 24‑year‑old male suspect, who was shot by police during a confrontation at Bondi Beach, woke from a coma early in the afternoon.
The man has been formally charged with multiple counts of murder and a charge of terrorism in connection with the deadly incident that left three victims dead and several others injured.
According to the New South Wales Police Force, officers responded to reports of an armed individual on Bondi Beach on Monday evening. The suspect opened fire on by‑standers, prompting a rapid police response that resulted in the suspect being shot and subsequently taken to a nearby hospital.
Hospital officials confirmed that the suspect, who was in a medically induced coma, began to show signs of consciousness on Tuesday afternoon. He is currently under close observation and remains in police custody.
The Crown Prosecutor’s Office has indicated that the case will proceed to the Supreme Court of New South Wales, where the suspect will face a full trial on the murder and terrorism charges. Pre‑trial hearings are expected to begin within the next two weeks.
Local residents and community leaders expressed relief that the suspect is now receiving medical care while also urging swift justice. “Our thoughts are with the families of the victims,” said Mayor Jane Collins. “We expect a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible.”
Police continue to gather evidence, including surveillance footage and witness statements, to build a comprehensive case. Authorities have also launched a parallel inquiry into possible extremist affiliations, given the terrorism charge.
