April assault ranks among the deadliest episodes of Sudan’s civil war

The United Nations has verified that more than 1,000 people were murdered when a paramilitary group stormed a displacement camp in Darfur in April. Survivors describe the onslaught as “especially brutal,” with gunfire, machetes, and arson directed at men, women, and children who had sought refuge from the broader conflict.

Hunger spreads as aid dwindles

In the weeks following the massacre, the humanitarian situation has deteriorated sharply. Western donors have slashed funding for the UN’s food‑distribution programs, cutting the daily ration that many camp residents receive. As a result, malnutrition is on the rise, and families are forced to survive on meager portions that no longer meet basic caloric needs.

Calls for urgent international response

Human‑rights groups and UN officials are urging the international community to restore and increase aid flows to the region. They warn that without immediate assistance, the combination of violence and starvation could trigger a secondary humanitarian disaster in an area already scarred by years of conflict.

What lies ahead for the displaced

With the camp’s infrastructure severely damaged and food supplies running low, many survivors are considering relocation to other shelters or attempting the perilous journey back to their home villages. The UN stresses that any movement must be coordinated with security forces to avoid further attacks and that sustained humanitarian support is essential to prevent a deeper crisis.
