Authorities confirmed that an explosion detonated in the southern district of Moscow early Tuesday, killing three people, including two uniformed police officers. The blast occurred just a few blocks away from the site where a high‑ranking military commander was killed by a car bomb earlier this week.
The explosion ripped through a residential building on Leninsky Prospekt, shattering windows and sending debris onto the street. Emergency crews arrived within minutes, but the two officers, who were on patrol nearby, succumbed to their injuries on the scene. A third victim, a civilian passerby, also died from wounds sustained in the blast.
Only days before, a car bomb targeted a convoy carrying the head of the Southern Military District, killing the general and several of his staff. That attack sparked a heightened security presence across the capital, prompting police to increase patrols in the area where today’s explosion took place.
The Moscow police department released a statement urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. “We are conducting a thorough investigation to determine whether today’s blast is linked to the recent attack on the military commander,” the statement read.
Investigators from the Federal Security Service (FSB) have taken over the case, and a task force is expected to interview witnesses and review surveillance footage. The city’s mayor has pledged additional resources to ensure public safety while the investigation continues.
