As the autumn season sets in across the United States, one iconic drink is synonymous with the cozy warmth of fall: the Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL). However, this beloved beverage has not quite reached the same level of popularity in Europe, where its presence is patchy at best. While residents of Brussels and Antwerp can indulge in a PSL, those in Paris and Rome are largely out of luck.

The PSL’s European rollout has been limited, with few cafes and coffee shops outside of major cities offering the drink. Even in cities where it is available, the PSL is often not a standard menu item, and customers may need to request it specially. This is in stark contrast to the United States, where the PSL is a ubiquitous feature of fall menus, with major coffee chains and independent cafes alike offering their own versions.

Another key difference between the European and American PSL experiences is the sugar content. While American PSLs are notorious for their high sugar levels, European versions tend to be less sweet, with a more subtle flavor profile. This may be due in part to differences in consumer preferences, as well as local tastes and traditions.

Despite its limited availability, the PSL has still managed to generate buzz among coffee enthusiasts and fans of American pop culture in Europe. Social media platforms are filled with photos of PSLs enjoyed by expats and travelers, often accompanied by enthusiastic reviews and recommendations.

For now, it seems that the PSL will remain a niche offering in Europe, cherished by a dedicated few rather than a mainstream phenomenon. However, as global tastes continue to evolve and American-style coffee culture spreads across the continent, it’s possible that the PSL will eventually become more widely available – and perhaps even more decadent – on European menus.
