The Hong Kong branch of China’s National Security Office has called in several foreign journalists for questioning, alleging that some foreign media have been “smearing” the authorities’ handling of a recent blaze at a high‑rise residential complex.
According to the statement released by the office, reporters who covered the incident were warned not to repeat unverified claims. The officials emphasized that the media should “not claim they were not warned” before publishing any further commentary on the incident.
The summons comes amid heightened scrutiny of press coverage in the city, with officials reiterating that all reporting must align with official narratives and avoid what they describe as “baseless criticism.”
