Departure comes after postponed Siri overhaul and growing competitive pressure

John Giannandrea, the veteran technologist who was poached from Google in 2018 to head Apple’s artificial‑intelligence efforts, has confirmed that he will be stepping down from his role later this year. Giannandrea’s exit marks the end of a pivotal era for Apple’s AI ambitions.

Giannandrea was recruited with the promise of accelerating Apple’s machine‑learning capabilities and giving the iPhone’s voice assistant, Siri, a much‑needed refresh. However, the highly anticipated Siri update was delayed repeatedly, and the project has now been pushed back indefinitely.

The setback has fueled speculation that Apple is lagging behind rivals such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, all of which have launched sophisticated conversational agents and AI‑powered services in recent months. Industry analysts note that Apple’s cautious approach to generative AI may be costing it market share in a rapidly evolving landscape.

In a brief statement, Giannandrea said, “It has been an honor to work with the brilliant teams at Apple. I am confident the company will continue to innovate and deliver exceptional experiences for its users.” He added that he will remain at Apple in an advisory capacity for the next few months to ensure a smooth transition.

Apple has not yet named a successor, but insiders suggest that the company is evaluating several internal candidates with deep expertise in both hardware integration and large‑scale AI research.
