Los Angeles – The Walt Disney Company announced today that it has entered into a historic partnership with OpenAI to allow Disney’s classic characters to appear in videos produced by the AI‑driven platform Sora.
The agreement grants OpenAI limited, licensed access to Disney’s extensive catalog of intellectual property, enabling creators to generate short‑form video content that includes Mickey Mouse, Elsa, Iron Man and other beloved figures. In return, Disney will receive a revenue share from any monetized Sora productions that feature its characters.
“This collaboration opens a new frontier for storytelling,” said Bob Iger, CEO of Disney. “By responsibly integrating generative AI, we can give fans fresh ways to experience our worlds while protecting the integrity of our brands.”
OpenAI’s Sora, launched earlier this year, uses advanced text‑to‑video models to turn written prompts into cinematic clips in seconds. The platform has already attracted attention from advertisers, indie filmmakers, and social‑media creators for its ability to produce high‑quality visuals without traditional production pipelines.
The deal is being hailed as a watershed moment for Hollywood, which has been grappling with the potential risks and rewards of generative AI. Industry leaders see the partnership as a test case for how major studios can monetize their IP while setting standards for ethical AI use.
Critics, however, warn that the ease of creating realistic footage could blur the line between original content and AI‑generated replicas. “We need robust safeguards to prevent misuse of iconic characters,” said Maria Giese, president of the Writers Guild of America West.
Both Disney and OpenAI have committed to a joint oversight board that will review all Sora outputs featuring Disney properties. The board will enforce guidelines on context, audience suitability, and brand consistency, and will have the authority to veto any video that violates Disney’s standards.
While the initial rollout will focus on short, non‑commercial clips for social platforms, both companies hint at broader ambitions, including AI‑assisted pre‑visualization for feature films and interactive experiences for theme‑park attractions.
As the entertainment landscape evolves, the Disney‑OpenAI partnership may become a blueprint for how legacy studios can embrace emerging technologies without surrendering creative control.
