Deadly barrage hits Ukraine’s capital hours after diplomatic progress was reported

Kyiv, Ukraine – In the early hours of the morning, a coordinated wave of missiles and Shahed-type drones slammed into the Ukrainian capital, leaving at least six civilians dead and numerous others injured, according to local authorities.

The attack came just hours after Ukrainian officials announced that preliminary discussions in Geneva had yielded a modest breakthrough on a proposed cease‑fire framework. The timing has sparked speculation that the strike was intended to undermine the nascent diplomatic momentum.

Witnesses described a “storm of explosions” that rattled the city centre, with fireballs lighting up the night sky and emergency sirens wailing across neighborhoods. “We heard the sound of rockets, then the drones buzzed overhead before the blasts hit,” said one resident who asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the assault, calling it “a blatant attempt to sabotage peace efforts and terrorize civilians.” The Ukrainian Defence Ministry confirmed that air‑defence systems intercepted several of the incoming projectiles, but some managed to strike residential blocks and a public market.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry, while denying direct involvement, issued a statement accusing “Western powers of fueling the conflict” and warning that “any attempts to impose a peace plan without the participation of all parties will be futile.”

International reactions have been swift. The United Nations called for an urgent investigation, and the European Union urged both sides to “refrain from any further escalation that could jeopardise the fragile dialogue.”

Humanitarian organisations are mobilising to provide aid to the victims, and hospitals across Kyiv report a surge in admissions for blast‑related injuries. The city’s mayor has declared a state of emergency and urged residents to remain vigilant as the situation develops.
