On 7 October 2023, militants from Hamas launched a large‑scale assault on southern Israel, capturing more than 250 hostages. Among those seized were 31 Thai nationals, who were subsequently taken to the Gaza Strip.
In a rare act of cooperation, Hamas has now handed over the remains of the final Thai captive. The body was delivered to the International Committee of the Red Cross, which will arrange its repatriation to the victim’s family.
To date, the remains of every hostage have been recovered except for one Israeli who remains missing. Ongoing international efforts aim to locate and identify that individual.
The Thai government expressed deep gratitude for the return, stating, “We thank all parties involved for allowing the family to begin the mourning process.” Humanitarian organizations described the gesture as a modest step toward easing the immense suffering caused by the conflict.
