The Leonids meteor shower will hit its maximum activity on the night of November 17‑18. With the moon only a thin crescent, the sky will stay dark enough to spot even the faintest streaks.
Look for a location far from city lights and give your eyes at least 20 minutes to adjust to the darkness. A clear horizon to the north or east will provide the widest sweep of the radiant point.
During the peak, you can expect 10–15 meteors per hour, with occasional fireballs that burn brighter than Venus. The moon’s low illumination this weekend reduces glare, making those bright fireballs easier to spot.
While the naked eye is sufficient, a pair of binoculars can help you locate the radiant area, and a wide‑field camera with a long exposure can capture the streaks for later viewing.
With the moon far from full, this weekend offers one of the best chances of the year to enjoy the Leonids in all their glory. Set up early, stay patient, and you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular celestial display.
