Roblox, the massive online gaming platform popular with millions of young players, has launched a new face‑scan system aimed at verifying users’ ages. The company says the technology is designed to prevent children from being exposed to unsolicited contact with older strangers on the platform’s chat and messaging services.
When a user creates an account or updates their profile, they will be prompted to take a quick selfie using their device’s camera. An on‑device AI algorithm compares the image to a database of age‑related facial features, estimating the user’s age range. If the system determines the player is under the required age for certain interactions, those features are automatically restricted.
Roblox emphasizes that all facial data is processed locally on the user’s device and never stored on external servers. The company states that the scans are deleted immediately after the age check is completed, and no images are shared with third parties.
The announcement has sparked a mixed response. Parents like the added safety layer, with many noting, “It gives us peace of mind knowing my child can’t be contacted by unknown adults.” However, some users and privacy advocates express concern about the potential for misuse, asking for greater transparency about the underlying algorithms.
For younger users, the new verification may limit access to certain chat functions and user‑generated content until they reach an appropriate age. Older players will continue to enjoy the platform’s full suite of features, but they may also be prompted to verify their age if they interact with younger accounts.
Roblox says the face‑scan tool is just the first step in a broader effort to create a safer environment for its community. Future updates may include additional safeguards, such as parental controls and real‑time monitoring of suspicious activity.
