Switzerland is pushing to negotiate a new trade deal with the United States, as the country looks to strengthen economic ties and mitigate the impact of tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration. The Swiss government has been actively seeking a new agreement that would provide greater access to the U.S. market and help to offset the effects of trade tensions between the U.S. and other countries.

Swiss Trade Minister, Elisabeth Eckelberger, has stated that her country is eager to build on the existing trade relationship with the U.S., which has been in place for over 70 years. However, with the introduction of tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, as well as retaliatory measures from other countries, Eckelberger believes that a new deal is necessary to ensure the continued growth and stability of Swiss-U.S. trade.

The Swiss government has been exploring various options to deepen its trade relationship with the U.S., including the possibility of a bilateral free trade agreement. According to Eckelberger, such an agreement would not only help to reduce tariffs on Swiss exports but also promote greater cooperation on regulatory issues and other areas of mutual interest.

The U.S. and Switzerland have a long-standing trade relationship, with the U.S. being one of Switzerland’s largest trading partners. In 2020, bilateral trade between the two countries was valued at over $60 billion, with Swiss exports to the U.S. including a range of goods such as machinery, electronics, and pharmaceuticals.

Despite the potential benefits of a new trade deal, negotiations are likely to be challenging, particularly given the current trade tensions between the U.S. and other countries, including China and the European Union. Nevertheless, Eckelberger remains optimistic about the prospects for a new agreement, citing the strong historical ties between the two countries and the shared interests of U.S. and Swiss businesses.

The Swiss government’s efforts to secure a new trade deal with the U.S. come as other countries are also seeking to negotiate their own trade agreements with the Trump administration. However, with the U.S. having already imposed tariffs on a range of imports, and with the ongoing uncertainty surrounding global trade policies, it remains to be seen how successful Switzerland will be in its bid to secure a new deal.
