At least 80 individuals set free, yet over 800 remain incarcerated

The Venezuelan government announced that it has liberated a group of political prisoners, freeing a minimum of 80 people who had been held for opposing the regime of President Nicolás Maduro. Among those released is a citizen with documented connections to the United States, a detail that has drawn particular attention from international observers.

Human‑rights organizations, however, caution that the mass release does not signal a broader shift in policy. According to their latest counts, more than 800 individuals continue to be detained on charges related to dissent, protest activities, or alleged threats to national security.

Advocates for political freedom argue that the recent pardons are largely symbolic and that the underlying legal framework used to imprison critics remains unchanged. They call for comprehensive reforms, the release of all remaining political prisoners, and the establishment of transparent judicial processes.

International bodies, including the United Nations and the Organization of American States, have urged the Maduro administration to respect due process and to halt further arrests of opposition figures. The United States, in particular, has expressed concern over the detention of its citizen and has called for his immediate and unconditional release.

While the release of 80 detainees may offer a brief moment of relief for families and activists, the continued incarceration of hundreds underscores the persistent challenges facing Venezuela’s political landscape.
