After two days of intensive negotiations with Western partners, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he feels a “cautious optimism” about the chances of reaching a comprehensive peace settlement.
The discussions focused primarily on security guarantees that would protect Ukraine’s sovereignty while addressing Moscow’s concerns. Both sides reported “some progress” in defining the mechanisms for monitoring and enforcing any future agreement.
Despite the forward steps, Russia remains firmly opposed to any provision that would allow foreign troops to operate on Ukrainian soil, a stance that continues to complicate the diplomatic calculus.
Zelensky stressed that while the talks are a positive sign, the road ahead is “still long and uncertain.” He urged his allies to maintain pressure on Moscow and keep the dialogue open, hoping that incremental gains can eventually lead to a lasting peace.
